Which repairs are worth financing
We generally finance repairs above roughly $1,500. Below that, most homeowners are better off paying directly rather than taking on a loan. Above it, the repairs that typically come to us are compressor replacement, evaporator or condenser coil replacement, major refrigerant leak repair, blower motor and control board failures on newer systems, and full ductwork remediation.
The judgment call is always repair versus replace. A useful benchmark: when the repair exceeds about a third of replacement cost and the unit is past ten years old, replacement usually wins. A $2,800 compressor in a thirteen-year-old system is money spent on equipment likely to fail elsewhere soon.
Getting a second opinion before you commit
Because we finance both repairs and replacements and are not a contractor, we have no financial preference between them. That is worth something when you are trying to figure out whether a quote is fair.
If a contractor has quoted a large repair on an aging system, it is entirely reasonable to get a second opinion before financing it. Our network contractors are licensed and insured, and we can route you to one for an independent assessment.

That labor charge is financeable. Check your registration status before assuming a repair is entirely out of pocket, because the difference is substantial.
The repair-versus-replace math, worked honestly
The common heuristic is the $5,000 rule: multiply the age of the system by the repair cost, and if the result exceeds $5,000, replace. A twelve-year-old system with a $500 repair scores 6,000 — replace. A four-year-old system with the same repair scores 2,000 — fix it.
It is a decent starting point but it ignores three things that matter in Florida. First, refrigerant type: any R-22 system is on borrowed time regardless of age, because refrigerant cost alone can make future repairs uneconomical. Second, whether this is the first significant failure or the third — a system with a repair history is telling you something. Third, how long you intend to stay in the house. Financing a $3,000 repair on an aging system makes little sense if you are selling in eighteen months.
The other factor is efficiency drift. A fifteen-year-old system running at degraded capacity may be costing you $40 to $80 a month more than a new one would across a Florida cooling season. Over the remaining life you are trying to buy with a repair, that gap sometimes exceeds the repair cost itself.

What common failures actually cost and what causes them
Capacitor failure is the most common call in Florida and usually runs $150 to $400. It is a small cylinder that gives the compressor and fan motor their starting jolt. Heat kills them, which is why they fail in August. This is not a financing conversation, it is a same-day fix.
Contactor failure is similar in scale, typically $150 to $350. Ants are a genuine and specific Florida cause — they crawl into the contactor, get electrocuted across the terminals, and weld it shut or foul the contacts.
Blower motor replacement runs roughly $450 to $1,200 depending on whether it is a standard PSC motor or an ECM variable-speed unit.
Evaporator coil replacement runs $1,000 to $2,800. Formicary corrosion — microscopic tunneling caused by household chemical off-gassing — is a widespread cause of coil leaks and is not the contractor's fault or yours.
Compressor replacement runs $1,500 to $3,500 installed, or $1,200 to $2,000 in labor alone if the part is still under manufacturer warranty. This is the failure that usually triggers the replace conversation, because a compressor failure on a system past ten years frequently signals the rest is close behind.
